We all have that one friend who likes to take a joke one step too far. They’re the friend that we love to hate, because they’re generally making other people feel a little silly. As bad as it may be, it’s usually hilarious for us. This is one of those times. Toronto-based writer, Katie Cunningham, posted a joke on Twitter earlier this week that caught the attention of a fellow social media user, @voldemortsbicep. In short, Katie trolled the hell out of the guy and caused heaps of laughter for everyone who witnessed it.

Well played Katie, well played. The fun did not stop there though. The tweet exchange quickly went viral with thousands of retweets and screenshots that were uploaded to other social media platforms. A few people took the time to congratulate Katie on her witty sense of humour saying things like “not all heroes wear capes.” Katie gave Buzzfeed a statement about her recent joke. “’The majority of the reactions have been really great! Lots of slow clap GIFs and crown emojis haha, it’s been pretty fun,’ she said. ‘Obviously, there are plenty of mean @’s, mostly from people who have apparently never been condescended to, or people calling me a sociopath for this ‘game.’”

The “random” guy in question seemed slightly baffled by the whole thing and continued to tweet about it.

“He says he was playing along, and we had a pretty legit talk about the fact that sarcastic or ironic misogyny is inadvisable on a platform where you can’t read tone. Apparently, he’s been pretty shocked at the people defending him and criticizing me, which just proves my point: So many men @ me horrible, condescending stuff (this morning I got a DM that just said ‘cancer’) that there’s no way to tell who is serious and who is ‘joking. “All in all, he’s been a pretty good sport about everything.’”

What’s the moral of the story here? More often than not, tone is misconstrued in text conversations. It often lands people in some pretty hot water.
